UKRAINIAN CANADIAN FILM COMMUNITY
Welcome to the Ukrainian Canadian Film Community (UCFC)
Started in 2023, UCFC was created to bring together Ukrainian filmmakers who have long been calling Canada home, as well as those who relocated following the 2022 russian full-scale invasion.
We’re here to make the journey into Canada’s film industry a little easier. Navigating the creative world can be challenging — especially when you’re starting fresh in a new country. That’s why we’re all about connecting, collaborating, and supporting one another as we find our place in this vibrant industry.
Our goal is to amplify fresh Ukrainian voices in the vast Canadian film landscape. Whether you’ve just arrived, been here for years, or were born in Canada but carry Ukrainian roots, we welcome everyone with a connection to Ukraine. UCFC is a space for mentorship, new connections, and boosting your visibility — all while celebrating the power of storytelling and creativity. Together, we’ll make sure Ukrainian voices are heard and thrive.

Special Screening and Panel Discussion
“Colonization of Art in the Light of the Ukrainian Experience”
september 23
INNIS TOWN HALL, TORONTO
UCFC IS INVITING YOU TO THE FOLLOWING EVENT
We would be honoured if you join us for a special screening of Malevych followed by the panel “Colonization of Art in the Light of the Ukrainian Experience” on September 23, 6:30 PM at Innis Town Hall, with Prof. Myroslav Shkandrij, Prof. Marci Shore and Prof. Oleh S. Ilnytzkyj as lead speakers.
The evening begins with a screening of the historical drama about Kazymyr Malevych, creator of Black Square, one of the most influential works of 20th-century art, whose Ukrainian roots were long obscured under empire. The film will be followed by the panel discussion at 8:00 PM.
This panel is more than a conversation about one artist — it is an urgent reflection on how cultural memory is shaped. At a time when institutions everywhere grapple with representation, equity, and the legacies of empire, this dialogue is essential. For galleries, museums, educators, journalists, and community leaders, it offers a chance to engage with decolonization that resonates far beyond Ukraine — while also learning from Ukraine’s ongoing fight to decolonize itself from russian imperial obsession.
Your participation will connect you with artists, scholars, and cultural leaders in this dialogue and affirm your commitment to fostering inclusive narratives within galleries, museums, classrooms, media, and community spaces.
